Medical Oncology & Radiation Oncology Services
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Rockville Centre has offered medical oncology and radiation oncology services since 1997. Recent renovations to the cancer center have made the facility more inviting and patient-friendly. A brand new infusion suite ensures that patients are treated in safe, comfortable surroundings.
The center houses two state-of-the-art linear accelerators that use high-energy radiation to treat patients. We also use CT-based treatment planning to help map and deliver intensity modulated radiation treatments. These techniques conform the dose of radiation around the target while avoiding healthy tissue, allowing higher doses to be delivered safely.
A sophisticated technique of radiation delivery called image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is also being used at Rockville Centre. IGRT uses radiology imaging (x-ray and/or CT scans) taken immediately before treatment to guide radiation with even greater precision. In addition, we offer brachytherapy for women with gynecologic cancers; this is a type of internal radiation in which radioactive material is placed directly into or near a tumor.
Support Services
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Rockville Centre has a social worker who offers counseling and support to patients and family members coping with the spectrum of issues related to life during and after treatment. In addition, regular support groups are available at Rockville Centre. Patients can also participate in the Look Good...Feel Better program, which helps cancer patients cope with the effects that treatment can have on their appearance.
